Gauteng Government Bursaries

The Head of Department of the Gauteng Provincial Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs hereby invites registered/admitted under/post graduate students to apply for bursaries to undertake full-time studies in the 2017 academic year. CoGTA is offering 20 bursaries.

6 bursaries of which are earmarked for dependants of military veterans (confirmation of registration in this regards must be attached).

Applicants must pursue full-time under/post graduate studies in the following fields:

  • Engineering and Town Planning Infrastructure Development related studies
  • Finance and Accounting and
  • Governance and Risk,

The Bursary covers:

Tuition and registration fees, prescribed books and/or study material and is limited to the maximum value of R 30,000.00 per learner, for the 2017 academic year.


Applicants must be South African citizens between the ages of 18 and 35, completed grade 12, applicants must reside in Gauteng, already registered or in possession of admission letter from an accredited institution within Gauteng Province.


Selection of successful candidates will be strictly based on academic merit.

Applicants are expected to study at an accredited South African tertiary institution within Gauteng.

It is the student’s responsibility to seek/obtain admission with a tertiary institution.

The bursary is for post/under graduate qualifications of no less than 360 NQF Credits.

Successful candidates will be required to enter into a Bursary Contract.

CoGTA has no obligation to employ the bursary holder on completion of the qualification.

Applicants should not hold concurrent bursaries or financial study assistance from other organisations/institutions.

The Department is committed to Employment Equity; therefore preference will be given to candidates from disadvantaged groups.

Upon successful completion of the study period, students may be employed within the Sasol Group through our Graduate Development Programme.

All individuals writing matric after 2007 must meet the following criteria:

Applicants must be South African citizens with a valid ID number.
A minimum of a Level 4 for English First Language or a Level 5 for English Second Language in Grade 11.
A minimum of a level 7 for Mathematics and a minimum of a level 6 in Physical Science in Grade 11 if you are applying for a bursary in one of the Engineering or Science fields.
A minimum of a level 6 in Mathematics if applying for a B com Accounting/ Business Science ( CA route) fields.
A minimum of a level 5 in Accounting if you are applying for B Com Accounting

A minimum of a D symbol for English First Language HG or a C symbol for English Second Language HG in Grade 12. (The majority of academic textbooks used at university are imported from overseas and are thus published in English).
A minimum of an A symbol for Mathematics HG and a B symbol for Physical Science HG in Grade 12 if you are applying for a bursary in one of the engineering or science fields.
A minimum of a C symbol for Accounting HG in Grade 12 if you are applying for B Com Accounting.
If you are already studying towards the degree course for which you are applying for a bursary, you must have passed all courses for which you have registered at the university for the study period already completed.

Applications must be for full-time studies towards an academic degree at an accredited South African university.

No bursaries are awarded for studies at a university of technology or college.

Applicants must be South African citizens with a valid ID number.

Any bursary awarded is subject to the condition that the candidate’s end of year results in Grade 12 (if currently in matric) or end of year results at university (if currently studying at university) do not differ substantially from the results presented during the application process.

Sasol reserves the right to withdraw the offer of a Sasol bursary if the candidate performs substantially weaker academically than the academic performance presented during the application process.

Thuthuka Bursaries

Thuthuka Bursaries

The purpose of the project is to annually place between 250 – 300 fully bursared Black African and Coloured students at selected SAICA-accredited universities in cohorts of 50 per university on special undergraduate BCom Accounting education programmes.

The accredited universities that are part of the programme are the University of KwaZulu-Natal, University of Johannesburg, Stellenbosch University, University of Pretoria, University of Cape Town, Free State University and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

The Thuthuka Bursary Fund is looking for academically strong learners who aspire to become Chartered Accountants.

Students who do exceptionally well in Mathematics and have excellent marks in the other subject to qualify for university entrance may apply.

Who Can Apply?

• Do you have 60% in Mathematics in your Grade 11 Final Results (Level 5)?
• Do you have enough points to qualify for university entrance?
• Do you come from a family that cannot support you financially at tertiary?
• Are you an African or Coloured learner?

Requirements for application of the Thuthuka bursary

Aspiring CA(SA) learners who wish to apply for the bursary must: Be a South African Citizen• Have obtained at least 60% (five or above on the NSC Scale of Achievement) in Mathematics (NOT Maths Literacy) in Grade 11
• The learner must be a South African Citizen
• Be in Grade 12 and applied (or be in the process of applying) for a BCom Accounting degree at a SAICA-accredited university offering the Thuthuka programme
• Be African or Coloured
• The learner must not be out of Matric/school for more than 2 years.
• To be considered for the Thuthuka Bursary Fund, you are required to register and write the National Benchmark Test (NBT).
